Dr. Samuel Ndogo Kenia/ Deutschland

Dr. Samuel Ndogo is an alumnus of the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS), University of Bayreuth, Germany, where he graduated with a PhD in African Literature. In his book Narrating the Self and Nation in Kenyan Autobiographical Writings (Berlin and Zurich: LIT Verlag, 2016), Ndogo analyses autobiographical works of four Kenyans—Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Wangarĩ Maathai and Bethwell Allan Ogot—to demonstrate how personal narratives are employed as means of interrogating and configuring Kenyan nationhood. He shows that the autobiography can be considered as a form of cultural imagination, memorialisation, historiography and politics of representation. Moreover, this work illuminates how individual and collective memories are used to fashion personal as well as national identities.
Ndogo is a Senior Lecturer and Head of Department at the Department of Literature, Theatre and Film Studies, School of Arts and Social Sciences, Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya. Apart from life writings his other research interests include literature in African languages, translation, performance and cultural studies. He has been working in close collaboration with Wangũi wa Goro in translating Binyavanga Wainaina’s short story “The Idea is to be Sealed in” into Gĩkũyũ language.
He is co-editor of the volume Tracks and Traces of Violence: Representation and Memorialization of Violence, Views from Art, Literature and Anthropology (Berlin and Zurich: LIT Verlag, 2017).
Since October 2019, Ndogo is an independent research fellow at the University of Bayreuth’s Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence, working on his project “Creative and Cultural Industries in Kenya: Aesthetics, Production and Audiences.”
